100 Vulvas: Laura Dodson’s Newest Photography Project
Warning: Adult Content
Laura Dodson, a photographer known for her “The Bare Reality” series, has featured breasts and penises in her previous installations. Her latest in the series, “100 Vulvas”, seeks to promote the variety and commonalities in a body part that’s frequently kept under wraps.
Over the course of a year, Dodson worked with women and gender non-conforming people in an effort to bring the vulva to light, so to speak, and help alleviate some of the discomforts many people carry about themselves and their bodies.
Working on this project, in particular, was eye-opening and empowering for Dodson, too, who began the series by taking a photograph of her own vulva. By baring themselves so intimately, participants shared their stories – releasing grief, shame, trauma and sadness, and finding new and joyous ways of seeing themselves.
This newest installment in The Bare Reality was recently featured in the Guardian, as were the previous two, Bare Reality: 100 Women, Their Breasts, and Their Stories and 100 Penises: The Bare Reality. She was also recently asked to speak at TedX München, to be released this month – I’ll add the link once it’s live.
