Happy New Year!
As 2021 winds down, I hope we can all enjoy a break from work, some time to rest and connect with friends & loved ones. Here are some favorite recommendations for shows & movies to watch or read while you relax this season. Bonus, they might also benefit your sexual health!
TV
- Sex Education – The focus of this witty Netflix series is a high school in the UK where teens endeavor to learn about sex through trial and error. The show highlights the importance of comprehensive sex education for teens and having safe and informed people (the awesome Gillian Anderson and her son) to come to with their questions.
- Normal People – A romance/drama about a love story between two young adults, completely relatable, sexy, and entrancing. This show is well scripted and feels authentic.
- Vida – if you’re craving a show to watch that takes you out of the hetero-normative viewpoint and has diverse representation, Vida is a show that hones in on a Latinx story line. A great example of women asserting their sexual preferences through good communication. The critics describe it as refreshing and groundbreaking.
- Shrill – Starring Aidy Bryant, Shrill is a comedy/drama with sharp social commentary that is size-inclusive. This series tells the story of a woman chasing self-acceptance and refusing to settle for anything less.
- Broad City – A group of friends in New York, navigating modern dating and survival. The show focuses on captivating relational topics with relatability and humor. It’s five seasons of quick 20 minute episodes that can be fully binged on your winter break!
- The Bisexual – This comedy/drama is about a woman who has identified as gay for a long time and is coming to terms with the fact that she might be bisexual.
Bi representation is scarce in tv and movies. This show is a welcome change and brings up issues that are rarely portrayed.
- Fleabag – Another excellent witty British comedy that features a woman owning her own sexuality, asserting herself, and managing personal tragedy through humor.
- Sex Love and Goop – A new show about a team of sexological experts helping people improve their relationships through deepening intimacy and increasing pleasure. No matter how you feel about the Goop franchise as a whole, this show is groundbreaking for mainstream TV and offers valuable content and helpful demos!
Books
- Eight Dates by John and Julie Gottman – This book invites you to discover yourself and your partner in new ways by planning out eight different dates that each tackle a big topic. It provides encouragement to stay open and curious. Learn how to communicate and talk through the big stuff with your partner and grow a deeper bond!
- Come as You Are by Emily Nagoski – This book brings science and evidence to the conversation about why couples stop having sex, and how to heal from it. With remarkable insights and practical applications, Nagoski has sewn together a beautiful picture of the natural ebb and flow of sex in relationships. Even with a focus on female sexuality and pleasure, any gender would benefit from reading this book.
- 101 Nights of Great Sex by Laura Corn – A New York Times best-seller that many thousands swear by. Filled with suggestions and recipes for seduction and surprise, each partner gets to do their part in creating sexy scenarios.
- Women’s Anatomy of Arousal: Secret Maps to Buried Pleasure by Sherri Winston – Winston gives us a beautiful and profound look at pleasure and arousal for people who have vulvas. This is a great book for people exploring self-pleasure for themselves or with their partners.
