Sex coaching and acupuncture work well together.
“Acupuncture is a time-tested and effective modality to support many sexual health challenges in healing trauma and promoting emotional well being” — Nishanga Bliss, DSc, LAc ( Professor of acupuncture and integrative Mendocino College, Berkeley, CA)
Sex coaching and acupuncture? Yes, absolutely. These modalities can work in sync to address sexual health for men, women, non-binary, trans and intersex folks (including the specific challenges of those who have had gender reassignment surgery). Some of the common sexual health challenges both practices work with are erectile dysfunction, menopausal concerns, low libido, difficulty with orgasm, and conditions related to painful intercourse such as vaginismus and vulvodynia.
Working with acupuncture and sex coaching
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) addresses health concerns in a harmonious and holistic way. Acupuncture treatment is predominantly focused with the physical flow of energy through the body (Qi) and has been used for thousands of years to promote wellness, treat disease and pain while improving overall physical health. By increasing the flow of energy to the genitals, for example, acupuncture can help improve ED and premature ejaculation, help alleviate painful intercourse, encourage fertility and lift a low sex drive.
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) can benefit and boost sexual vitality and or balance an excess or deficient libido in men and women by treating their kidney Yin, Yang essence” — Mary Arnold, LAc
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can include health and lifestyle change suggestions as well as acupuncture and herbal supplements to better improve the body’s energy flow and vitality. There are times, however, when an acupuncture client’s sexual health concerns stem from underlying psychological issues and they may need additional emotional support. They may be experiencing trauma, shame or need practical help and advice about sex. This would be an ideal time to offer their client further support by recommending or referring them to a certified sex coach. Ideally, a sex coach and acupuncturist will work together with the patient authorizing both practitioners to share information with each other, but at other times, one may directly recommend or refer a client depending on the patient’s needs.
Sex coaching can help address physical and emotional challenges arising from trauma, help a client build confidence, learn new skills, and learn to love and appreciate their body’s capacity for pleasure. I practice somatic sex coaching, which is body-based and focused on experience and observation; in-session, we practice fully-clothed, non-sexual exercises clients can take home with them.
When sex coaches send clients to acupuncturists
Since we address so many of the same issues, you might wonder why a sex coach might recommend working in tandem with an acupuncturist? I have found that Acupuncture and Sex Coaching are wonderfully complimentary especially when clients want to increase their pleasure potential and prefer to address physical sexual health concerns holistically rather than through traditional allopathic medicine and prescription meds.
Acupuncture treatment, together with healthier lifestyle choices, has been proven to be incredibly effective for clients working with erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, low libido, genital pain, and other sexual health issues. I help clients develop confidence in themselves, learn how to better work with their bodies and their desires, and provide practical advice, encouragement, and support through the process – when I feel a client might benefit from acupuncture alongside our work together, I will suggest a recommendation or a referral. Many acupuncturists are, like me, sexual trauma-informed and LGBTQIA+ and kink-friendly/aware, especially in the Bay area where I live and work. I am also happy to help you find an acupuncturist where you live.
