Sexy Bed-Rooms – a review of the Netflix show How to Build a Sex Room

We’re in the midst of the holiday season and for many of us  finding fun stress-free shows to watch is a great way to decompress after a busy, demanding day. How to Build a Sex Room is dedicated to the idea of creating a sexy space in your home to be intimate with your partner/s. How these fabulous rooms come together is where the fun begins!

The show is hosted by British interior designer Melanie Rose who found her niche in creating sexy, sensual spaces for her clients. In doing so, she became acquainted with sex furniture, adult toys and coupled her new knowledge of sexuality with her mastery in home design. In short, she began to specialize in sex room designs. With that, a new reality show was born where she helps all manner of people create their perfect sex spaces.

The Netflix show aired in July 2022 and quickly shot up for a stint as one of the most highly watched shows on the platform. It sits in the Home & Garden and Makeover Reality TV genres, which begs for a bit of a chuckle, given its spicy topic! While the genres it falls under might be a skosh misleading, the title of the show does not mince words. While it has received mixed reviews, it is at the forefront of sex positive reality tv and deserves kudos for pushing the conversation and the zeitgeist around sexual health and happiness forward. It seems that what people like most about this show is not necessarily the interior design aspect of it, but rather the sexual self discovery.

Melanie Rose is certainly cheeky, but her goofiness and general down-for-anything vibe comes off as disarming and warm as she brings up new ways for her clients to get adventurous with their sex lives. Whether you’re watching this show as an escape from the day-to-day or you’re taking notes on where to get that cool sex bench, this show is definitely sparking conversations.

With humor and curiosity, Rose guides her clients towards the potential that lies ahead of them and helps them curate a space based on their specific interests, taste, and preferences. She helps them open up, communicate their desires and unexplored fantasies.. Rose often starts by pulling out her little “bag of tricks” which contains sex toys like dildos, butt plugs, and then onto more kinky paraphernalia like floggers, ticklers, and restraints. Judging by the excited curiosity on the clients’ faces, this type of conversation was a welcome shift for many of them.

On the show, Rose’s clients’ desires for their spaces ran the gamut from simple and sensual vanilla, to kinky dominant and submissive, and even group sex rooms. What the show does well is normalize all kinds of consensual adult relationships. We all crave to be represented by the media, and “How to Build a Sex Room” does a great job representing a wide array of relationship styles.
