What is the gender spectrum?
For many people, their birth sex and gender identity match and often conform to the two most common genders (commonly referred to as the “gender binary”): male and female. But there are some folks who don’t fit into these two at all, who may feel they are some of both, or who find that they feel better expressing a gender that is different than the sex they were born with. You may have heard the terms transgender, transmasculine/feminine, gender fluid, gender queer, and other terms – these are the chosen words that folks who don’t fit into the male/female gender binary often use to describe themselves.
Although Western culture is changing, it’s a slow progression into a world where everyone can be and express who they really are. This can be a very tough environment for those who find themselves here, especially for those transitioning into a different gender expression, who are learning where they fit in and perhaps even adjusting to a brand new body.
As we grow more and more aware of the beautiful variety of human bodies and expressions, media professionals are also beginning to recognize the importance of normal, everyday representation of the gender spectrum. Vice.com’s feminism, gender, and identity-focused channel, Broadly, felt this so important that together with photographer Zackary Drucker, they produced The Gender Spectrum Collection – a free collection of stock photography featuring people who exist outside the gender binary, for non-commercial use anywhere. To really drive the point home, they suggest using these photos anywhere you might need a picture of happy people expressing themselves and living life. Not only will you be helping to normalize the vast array of gender expressions that exist, but you’ll also help to create a world where everyone can feel more comfortable being who they truly are.
And even if you’re not a media professional in need of stock photography, have a look at the photo gallery. We are all so unique and beautiful!
