Happy New Year 2023!

It’s almost the time of year for closing old chapters and initiating fresh new beginnings!

Imagine yourself leaving behind old habits and maintaining meaningful goals and intentions…and, if we’re honest with ourselves, many of our common desires for behavioral changes often don’t last more than a few weeks into the new year.

How do we set intentions that we can favorably maintain and accomplish in the new year?

Understanding Where You Are Now

Start with a review of your year. Where are you currently? In order to set attainable goals, they need to build off of your current situation. For example, if you have the goal of making a beautiful flower garden in your yard, take stock of your available time and funds for activities like gardening. Lean into what you’re capable of doing and you’ll maximize the potential for making it happen.

Review Questions

Below are a number of links to several techniques and lists of questions for annual reviews.

Pick one (or do all of them if you want–there are no rules) that suits you best and go from there. And yes, some of these are from years past; The years will continue to change, but the questions remain the same.

  • How to Pull Off a Personal Annual Review – This method is in-depth, fun, and intuitive. It’s an easy way to put your year into context, find themes, celebrate your successes, and then build off of them.
  • How to Do a Personal Annual Review – This method is similar to the first one, asking questions about specific categories. This focuses on lessons learned in the year. One of the takeaways: “with the right approach, you can turn even the worst year into a powerful learning experience.”
  • 63 Thought-Provoking Year-End Review Questions to Ask Yourself – This method places an emphasis on mindfulness. Rather than gathering up data points on your year and moving forward from there, this method feels like an interview. Once you write out, or talk about all of your answers, you will likely have a new and more appreciative perspective on your past year.
  • Ten Questions to Ask in Your Personal Year-End Review – Rounding up your feelings about the last year into ten questions, this method gives thought provoking questions about past accomplishments and and challenges, along with asking you forward thinking questions about how to utilize your talents, skills, and lessons learned in the year to come.
